“My name is Gavin and I’m a Research Geologist, based in the Geoscience Research Center in Aberdeen, United Kingdom. My role involves the development of the next generation of geological modelling tools within our in-house geomodelling software, for use by operational teams throughout the group I hold a Ph.D. in Earth Science and Engineering from Imperial College London and a M. Eng. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Edinburgh.
I’d say that teamwork and communication are essential components of the role. And a researcher should be highly motivated – enthusiasm helps when creating new ideas! I would also say it is important to be bold and inquisitive both technically and personally. This can help when developing solutions to difficult problems and also will help you to meet and learn from people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.
The working atmosphere within Total is friendly and collaborative, which helps when I am looking for solutions to solve technical problems. For my next job I may look to move to Total ’s headquarters for research and development (CSTJF) in Pau, in order to continue my research and to work as part of a larger team. Alternatively, I could transfer to an operational posting to gain different technical experience.”
