We are very proud of ‘Les Voiles des Mines’ team, from École des Mines de Douai, winners of a Team Total 2017 ‘Push your Limits’ Grant. They used the funding to attend this leading European student sporting event in Europe, with over 3000 participants from 160 world-class universities.  Here’s what team member Martin had to say in their post-race report!

“First of all, we are very happy to tell you that we achieved 5th place of the overall ranking of our category from 37 teams. To begin with, we had nice weather, perfect for sailing, although unfortunately the wind was sometimes weak. However, according to our skipper, our boat was one of the most efficient under these conditions.

Before the race, we practiced sailing during training sessions which were about 5 hours long. We learned a lot very quickly and reviewed the team members’ roles in order to use everyone’s skills in the best way. We were very pleased to win the first round – it was a perfect race for us. The second day was the hardest and we were out of luck and ended in 9th place. Fortunately, the regatta counts only your best 5 races, we were able to discount this performance. The following day, a mistake during a complex maneuver made us lose time but we moved up to 8th place. On the last day, we managed to move up to 6th place, so were awarded 5th overall!

Representing Total on the 49th Course Croisière EDHEC’s regatta has been a real honor. The application for Team Total funding was inspirational as it pushed us to be even more involved in our project. Being selected was an additional motivation for us to push our limits during the competition, which then was rewarded by a great position in the overall ranking.”
